Lettering Retreat

Before the eventful year comes to a close, unwind with calligraphy, coffee, and a renewed headspace.

We begin with the pointed nib in the morning, taking it easy with the lowercase before embarking on the uppercase and curvy-wurvy flourishes. This first session is a modern take on the classical English Roundhand (you may know it as Copperplate). We write reflections and healing love letters to our forgotten selves.

After lunch, we enjoy the vibrant colours of brush lettering and basics of handlettering. This second session is a guided hands-on watercolour handlettering with brush pens and paints. We choose either to make mini posters of our favourite words, or dive deep into a larger pin-up artwork of affirmations or inspirational quotes for our new selves.

Come reclaim, refresh and renew yourself for the new year. 

This retreat includes two tea breaks (coffee, tea and snacks), a standing buffet lunch, and the Retreat Tote of comprehensive notes and exercises, exemplars and templates, straight holder, oblique holder, pointed nibs, sumi ink, brush pens, watercolour, writing pad, collectible enamel pin and more!

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Ruth Tan started her creative journey in her childhood years with beaded figurines, embroidery and lots of doodling, under much encouragement from her mom and granny. While she enjoyed all of those as much as the next artsy kid, art was not thought possible as a career. God led her on an interesting path as a political analyst then an English teacher before setting up the Workroom in 2012. To date, Ruth has taught calligraphy in Singapore, Tokyo and Phuket, with a workshop clientele that includes Chanel, Dior, Burberry, SK-II, KPMG and the National Heritage Board. She does commissioned work for private clients and companies; her client portfolio includes art and calligraphy for Fendi, Gucci, IWC, LV, Piaget, Starbucks and Google. Ruth also organised fun exhibitions including the inaugural MT tape and craft exhibition and Calligraphy Travels at library@orchard. Between cooking for her children and writing for Chanel during the pandemic, Ruth went to law school, and is looking forward to her next adventure at the firm come January 2024.

This one-day retreat is for adults only. Fees include two tea breaks, a standing buffet lunch and the Retreat Tote with take-home materials worth $150. Only registration with payment is deemed as confirmed. Registration is transferrable up to 9AM, Thu 14 Dec 2023 (please contact info@theworkroom.sg with the name, tel and email of the person who is taking your seat).
